The internationally renowned National Film School in Łódź is often considered the most rigorous film schools in Poland and has over the years trained many of the most well-known directors in the world. Films made by students of the school, both narrative and documentary, are frequently showcased in film festivals around the world. We have selected 14 documentaries from different eras made by students of the school and have invited several young members of this group to join us in Hong Kong to share their experience with the school.

Education

Emi Buchwald
Poland / 2016 / 20 min

Synopsis
A chronicle of elementary school students learning a poem: from the teacher’s initial instructions, to discussions with parents at home, to the final recital in class.

Director's Profile
Emi Buchwald was graduated from the Łódź Film School in 2017, majoring in Film and Television Directing. Her works include Sisters, Heimat and Science.


One Two Zero

Anna Pawluczuk

Synopsis
A glimpse into the lives of young gymnasts as they undergo painful training while coping with enormous stress brought about by competitions.

Director's Profile
Anna Pawluczuk was born in 1991. She studies film directing in the Łódź Film School. Her works include One Two Zero and Fighter. And now she is cooperating with a film magazine in Poland.

Synopsis
Students at a special school in Wroclaw for the hearing and speech impaired may express themselves differently from others, but they share the same emotions as everyone else and need to deal with the same issues, from cultural identity to gender relations.

Director's Profile
Eri Mizutani was graduated from Tama Art University, and after that, she studied at the Łódź Film School. She is now an instructor for some theatre workshops in Poland. Her works include Their Voices and Silence Please.


Connected

Aleksandra Maciejczyk

Synopsis
At first glance they may look like a typical couple on a ski trip, but a closer look reveals something quite extraordinary: the husband is visually impaired and his every move is guided by his wife through radio.

Director's Profile
Aleksandra Maciejczyk is now in her fifth year at the Łódź Film School. Her works Connected was nominated in many film festivals in Poland.
