Since about a decade ago, documentary film production around the world has entered a new exciting phase: a large number of excellent and innovative works are being produced and as a result, documentaries have enjoyed greater popularity and now exert significant influence. (Example: An Inconvenient Truth)

During the same time, filmmakers in different Chinese communities in Asia have also been very productive and adventurous. Each year, there are hundreds of works being made. Many are highly interesting. Some are remarkable works of art. However, the chance for the general public to see and discuss them is rare.

The Chinese Documentary Festival is a unique cultural event showcasing outstanding Chinese documentary films and giving special recognition to talented Chinese documentary filmmakers whose works focus on China and the Chinese diaspora.

It is hoped that the Festival will help to make more documentaries accessible to the public. And by grouping films in Chinese languages together, thus creating a “collage” of records of contemporary Chinese lives, we encourage better communication among different communities as well as strengthen our cultural heritage.

The Festival, organized by Visible Record Limited, presents twelve of the latest and finest documentary films from China, Taiwan and Singapore. These films are the finalists for the Chinese Documentary Award 2008.

This year, about one hundred entries were submitted for the award. The winners will be announced on 12 January, 2008.

On behalf of the Festival, I would like to express gratitude to the jury members for their hard work and precise judgment. Also, I would like to thank all the sponsors for supporting such a non-commercial event. Lastly, I must thank Yijia Tiong’s effort for finding the first sponsor for the event. Her enthusiasm and dedication are highly inspiring.

Tammy Cheung, Director of Visible Record Ltd.
